About the opportunity
We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate for projects focused on quantum control engineering with trapped ions, and trapped-ion quantum simulation.  The incumbent will be directly integrated into our major international projects collaborating with other global leaders in quantum information.

The Quantum Control Laboratory at the University of Sydney is focused on studies of quantum control, metrology, and quantum simulation using trapped ions. We are located in the Sydney Nanoscience Hub, a new purpose-built research facility focused on quantum science. The lab is a part of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Engineered Quantum Systems (EQuS), a collaboration of five major Australian universities focused on fundamental and applied research in quantum physics and engineering.  Candidates will also have the opportunity to collaborate with external partners supported by major international projects. Details of recent publications and ongoing research projects are available here: http://www.physics.usyd.edu.au/~mbiercuk

Primary responsibilities will include constructing and testing of novel experimental apparatus, performing experimental research, mentoring postgraduate and undergraduate students, and providing day-to-day oversight of laboratory projects and students.

The current projects will follow our successful work on quantum control engineering, noise filtering, and the generation of strongly correlated spin states with ions. Candidates will have the opportunity to contribute broadly to the group and participate in the:

  1. Development of new techniques in the control of quantum systems, leveraging insights from the fields of quantum physics and control engineering.
  2. Development of new high-performance FPGA-based control systems for scalable quantum information experiments.
  3. Demonstration of new programmable quantum simulation protocols using linear ion chains and concepts from quantum control theory.
  4. Study of exotic phenomena in quantum magnetism and quantum many-body spin physics using trapped ions.

About you
We are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate with:

  • PhD (or near completion) in physics or equivalent in a relevant field
  • Experience in one or more of the following experimental areas: Ion Trapping, Atomic Physics, Experimental Quantum Information
  • Proven ability to lead projects individually and as part of a team, and deliver major research outcomes
  • Evidence of independent contributions to scientific or technical outcomes
  • Evidence of proficiency at oral and written communication.
  • Strong academic track record.

Desirable criteria include:

  • experience in one or more relevant experimental areas including: ion trap operation, quantum control of atomic systems, microwave electronics, UV laser systems, optical system design
  • experience in control engineering, quantum error correction and suppression, and quantum characterisation
  • a proven track record of high quality publications in relevant fields.

The position is full-time fixed-term at Level A with an initial term of one year with the possibility of extension subject to performance and funding availability.

Interested applicants should contact Prof. Michael Biercuk - Director, Quantum Control Laboratory, directly via email, michael.biercuk@sydney.edu.au
