Internship - SCaN Quantum Dot (Q-dot) Synthesis & Chemical Engineering - Nasa: Goddard Space Flight Center

As part of NASA’s ongoing maturation of quantum computing technology (specifically in applications for quantum & optical communications and quantum detectors for spectroscopy and imagery), the student will assist the team in setting up a new Q-dot synthesis laboratory & pipeline. The student will research and advise the team on specific hardware & consumable procurement, establish needs to communicate with the GSFC facilities team, ensure compliance with GSFC safety protocols, and document the synthesis process.

This position is likely to continue into the summer and autumn as the team moves out of the design phase; the project is unlikely to begin physically assembling equipment before June 2023. Ideal candidates will be available to continue working in the summer session.

All candidates must:

• US Citizen Only
•Be able to work in-person at Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD (this position is contingent on GSFC policies allowing in-person internships)
• Be willing to pass GSFC laser, chemistry, and vacuum-system safety certifications
• Have hands-on experience with synthetic chemistry
• Have significant course- or lab-work with quantum research
• Demonstrate the ability to work independently

Ideal candidates will have:
• Experience using and/or installing Schlenk lines
• Familiarity with absorption spectroscopy, quantum communications, space communications, optical communications, or detector design/manufacture
