Five-year Research Fellow position - Aalto University

The Department of Applied Physics is looking for a highly motivated Research Fellow to work on a project on superconducting quantum circuits, and on developing a many qubit processor for quantum computing and simulations.

This position is part of the Quantum Computer project that develops a scalable quantum computer in Finland. It is funded by the Technology Industries of Finland Centennial Foundation and Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation and steered by a working group of ten group leaders including the following ERC grant recipients: Doc. Mikko Möttönen (QCD group), Prof. Jukka Pekola (PICO group), and Prof. Pertti Hakonen (Nano group). The recruited candidate will also be heavily involved with in the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Quantum Technology (QTF) that is an outstanding working environment with over 100 researchers investigating superconducting and silicon-based quantum devices, and nanostructures. The work greatly benefits from the state-of-the-art cleanroom and low-noise measurement facilities of OtaNano.

For further information of the available position, contact the head of the Quantum Computer working group Doc. Mikko Möttönen (mikko.mottonen@aalto.fi).

Requirements

  • Doctoral degree in condensed matter physics or equivalent on a topic of relevance.
  • Strong drive towards excellence in science at the highest international level
  • Outstanding publication record in superconducting circuits
  • Solid background on the design, fabrication, measurement, and analysis of superconducting circuits and preferably qubits. This includes use of microwave measurement equipment and of nanofabrication and cryogenic tools such as dilution refrigerators.
  • Fluent verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Experience in carrying out independent research and working in a team of high-level scientists
  • Ability to instruct students and postdocs in superconducting circuits
  • Good team working skills to engage the different groups of QTF

Good programming skills in Python and field-programmable gate arrays (FPGSs) are highly appreciated.

Salary and duration

The Research Fellow contract will be made up to five years depending on the preferences of the candidate with possible extensions. The salary of the Research Fellow will be determined based on the experience of the candidate according to the practices of the department. The earliest (and preferable) starting date is January 2018 (negotiable). The annual total workload of research and teaching staff at Aalto University is 1624 hours. The position will be located at the Aalto University Otaniemi Campus.
