The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a new tenure-stream faculty appointment in theoretical areas related to quantum science and engineering, broadly defined. This appointment, which is subject to budgetary approval, will be at the Assistant Professor level, starting Fall 2021 or later. The University of Pittsburgh aims to hire multiple new faculty members in the general area of quantum science and engineering in the coming years, across a number of Departments and Schools. The University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, and Duquesne University have a growing community of researchers engaged in quantum science and engineering that are connected by the Pittsburgh Quantum Institute (PQI), which was established in 2012 to help unify and promote research in quantum science and engineering in Pittsburgh. For this search, we are especially interested in candidates who will enhance or complement existing theoretical and experimental condensed matter research efforts in the Department of Physics and Astronomy and among the larger PQI community, including quantum information, quantum optics, quantum materials, and computational physics.
Required Qualification: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in physics or closely related field, significant postdoctoral research experience, and the ability to establish a creative independent research program supported by external funding. Candidates must have the potential to teach effectively at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
