Faculty Professor Assistant/Physics - University of Pittsburgh

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a new tenure-stream faculty appointment in theoretical areas related to quantum science and engineering, broadly defined. This appointment, which is subject to budgetary approval, will be at the Assistant Professor level, starting Fall 2021 or later.  The University of Pittsburgh aims to hire multiple new faculty members in the general area of quantum science and engineering in the coming years, across a number of Departments and Schools.  A separate search in the area of quantum computing and communication is concurrently taking place in the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Computing and Information. https://www.sci.pitt.edu/about/work-us

The University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, and Duquesne University have a growing community of researchers engaged in quantum science and engineering that are connected by the Pittsburgh Quantum Institute (PQI), which was established in 2012 to help unify and promote research in quantum science and engineering in Pittsburgh. Please visit https://www.pqi.org for details about its constituent members, faculty, capabilities, and activities. For this search, we are especially interested in candidates who will enhance or complement existing theoretical and experimental condensed matter research efforts in the Department of Physics and Astronomy and among the larger PQI community, including quantum information, quantum optics, quantum materials, and computational physics.

Required Qualification: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in physics or closely related field, significant postdoctoral research experience, and the ability to establish a creative independent research program supported by external funding. Candidates must have the potential to teach effectively at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Candidates from groups traditionally underrepresented in physics are strongly encouraged to apply. One of the major strategic goals of the University of Pittsburgh is to “Embrace Diversity and Inclusion”; therefore, candidates should be committed to high-quality teaching and research for a diverse student body and to assisting our Department in enhancing diversity in all forms.

In order to ensure full consideration, completed applications should be received through the University’s Talent Center system, https://www.join.pitt.edu by January 8, 2021. Applications will be accepted for the duration of the search. Candidates should submit a CV that includes a full publication list; a statement addressing research accomplishments and future plans; a statement about teaching interests, goals and experience; a statement about experience with or plans to support inclusion and equity in physics and astronomy; three letters of recommendation should be sent to Michele Slogan at slogan@pitt.edu no later than January 15, 2021.
