Event description:

Simulation of realistic Josephson amplifiers & towards the Wilsonian program for effective models of molecules

In the first part of the talk, I will discuss numerical tools that we have built for the simulation of Josephson parametric amplifiers with fabrication disorder. I will show that disorder can cause amplifiers with very high Power Added Efficiency (PAE) to fail and present some preliminary designs that do not have quite as high a PAE but are more tolerant of disorder. In the second part of the talk, I will switch focus to the properties of molecules. I will discuss the competition between the Wilsonian program of constructing effective models and Anderson’s argument that ‘more is different’. I will present our work aimed at implementing the Wilsonian program at scales ranging from quantum chemistry to protein folding.
