Event description:

YQI Artist in Residence Stewart Smith is currently working on human-scaled light installation that will be installed on the New Haven Green in June 2023 inspired by the concepts and recent works of Yale Quantum Institute.

Stewart will present his ideas and inspirations, and YQI students and researchers are invited to come brainstorm ideas with him around snack and beverages on how to incorporate quantum concepts into a compelling temporary light installation.

BENEATH THE GREEN, THE QUANTUM  - June 23 at 9:30 pm

Festival visitors are invited to circulate through this light installation as if electrons ruminating within a closed quantum system. Not unlike the isolated, cold, and dark environment of a quantum device’s dilution refrigeration tank, the darkness of the night on the New Haven Green is traversed by striking bright lights. Stewart Smith has designed a human-scaled installation inspired by the concepts and recent works of Yale Quantum Institute researchers and students. The installation investigates the physical qualities of a quantum processor and its similarities to the New Haven Green’s network of footpaths, using light and projection as a medium. Nodes and the paths between those nodes are potential for entanglement and interaction in a network of qubits. Using the flow of visitors as a proxy for a flow of electrons through an imaginary quantum circuit, the observers are invited to witness the dual nature of light—its behavior as both a wave and a particle—with the luckiest of visitors embodying the mysterious act of quantum tunneling.
