The Department of Physics at the University of Toronto invites applications for a tenure-stream appointment in the area of Experimental Atomic, Molecular, and Optical (AMO) Physics and/or Experimental Quantum Optics. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor and commence on July 1, 2015.
We seek a candidate with the ability to build a strong independent experimental research program in a cutting-edge area of quantum optics broadly defined, which could for instance range from semiconductor quantum optics to degenerate atomic gases to quantum information (on any of a variety of platforms). The ideal candidate will have some overlap in interests and techniques with the existing groups, but complement the present efforts at the University of Toronto, which include (among other areas) photonic bandgaps, trapped ion physics, spin dynamics and quantum simulation in degenerate Fermi gases, laser-induced plasmas, entangled photons and quantum cryptography, ultrafast spectroscopy, quantum control, and quantum foundations. The successful candidate will join a cluster of eight faculty members in quantum optics, within a department that covers all areas of physics (including biophysics and atmospheric physics groups with a heavy use of modern optical techniques). The university-wide presence in nonlinear and quantum optics spans several faculties and departments and is among the most substantial in North America. Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. in physics or a related field by July 1, 2015 or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching and research. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
